I have been so honored to work with the crème de la crème in my field. I have been stimulated and exposed to so much talent over the years, which has inspired me to invent original techniques and formulas. I want to give back to both aspiring and dedicated at-home hair colorists by revealing some of what I have been privileged to learn over twenty-one-plus years of salon work.

The talented actresses and actors that I have worked with have also stretched my abilities. Through the years I have had the privilege to work on many films, coloring the hair of many amazing men and women, including Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Raquel Welch, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp. Along the way, lucky stylists encounter that rare client who helps them ascend to the next level of creating great color. For me, Drew Barry-more is that client-she has always pushed me to a higher plane of visual perfection!

Reese Witherspoon’s First Big Night Out as a Brunette: What Do You Think?

reese-witherspoon-300x400We had a feeling we were going to love Reese Witherspoon as a brunette, but in the one good look we had, her adorable baby distracted us too much to make an informed judgment.

But when her stunning new look at Sunday’s N.Y.C.Mud premiere changed the conversation from her legal troubles to her killer hair, we knew that the hue was something special.

We’ve been wondering how Witherspoon maintains the richer hue so far from her L.A.-based colorist Lorri Goddard, so we checked in to get the full scoop.

Goddard worked with hairstylist Lona Vigi to get Witherspoon’s hair color exactly right for the filmThe Good Lie, landing on a shade Goddard describes as “a medley of ribbons of different chocolates with a chestnut overlay … It needed to have warmth and richness.”

And Vigi has been keeping the color vibrant on the film’s Atlanta set. “Keeping a brunette like that, it’s about an every two week situation,” Goddard shares. Witherspoon’s natural blonde hue makes it a little easier to maintain, she says, because “you don’t have pigment fighting you to achieve those changes,” but she sent her to Atlanta with Avon’s Advanced Techniques shampoo and conditioner (Witherspoon is a spokeswoman for the brand).

In the end, Goddard says, the brunette really works for the actress because “it really shows off her coloring and her beautiful bone structure.” And we agree: Anything that could look equally good in the photo here as in the photo here is a hair color worth bragging about.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Haircut: Are You Loving It?

jennifer-lawrence-600x450It’s been a busy few months for Jennifer Lawrence‘s hair.

Shortly after sporting an elegant chignon at the Oscars, she dyed her hair jet black for her role in Catching Fire.

About a month after that, she was back to blonde, but still making a statement with an extremely elaborate updoon the set of another film.

And at Sunday’s GLAAD awards, she debuted a brand hew bob — but this look was all her own.

“Yesterday, Jennifer showed up an hour before call time and as she opened the door she was like ‘Mark, I want to cut it all off,’” her hairstylist Mark Townsend told Harper’s Bazaar. “I was like ‘What? Are we allowed to do that?’ And she said ‘Of course, it’s my hair!’”

Townsend cut a long, shaggy bob with wispy bangs. “She was super excited. It’s the shortest her hair has been her whole life,” he said — though in his own excitement, he cut his finger in the process! “As I cut, I lost track of how many times she said ‘I love it!’”

And we’ve lost track of how many times we’ve said it too (not to mention her gorgeous blonder hue courtesy of colorist Lorri Goddard)! Tell us: Do you like Lawrence’s long hair or new cut best?

How to Go Brunette Like Reese Witherspoon: Tips From Her Colorist

Apr 3, 2013 @ 5:45 pm

Reese Witherspoon surprised us this week by swapping her Legally Blonde hue for a darker tone, so we caught up with her colorist Lorri Goddard to get the full scoop. The real reason why she switched? Witherspoon’s new role in The Good Lie. “This rich brunette works with Reese’s coloring because it has movement and different layers of warmth and depth that show off her naturally beautiful skin and eye color,” she told InStyle.com. If you’re inspired to make a similar change, Goddard recommends looking for a few brunette shades you like before you head to the salon so you can bring examples to show your hairstylist. “It is important to find some visual images of brunette colors you naturally gravitate towards,” she said. “Ask your colorist to review the depth and tone with you to establish which colors work best with your eyes and skin.” After you shift shades, incorporate color-preserving shampoos and conditioners into your routine to keep your hair from fading.

Going From Blonde To Brunette? Avoid These 5 Common Hair Color Mistakes

Going From Blonde To Brunette? Avoid These 5 Common Hair Color Mistakes.

The Academy Award-winning actress may make pulling off such a dramatic transformation appear easy, but it simply isn’t. So, we asked Avon Global color expert Lorri Goddard (the woman behind Reese’s luxurious locks at the 2013 Oscars) to let us in on the common mistakes women make when going from blonde to brunette.

Mistake 1: Avoiding any warmth or “red”
Blondes going darker need to embrace there inner warmer hair hues (think deepest dark chocolate and caramelized medium brown). This keeps the skin and eye color their most striking. Mediocre tones that are too ashy can make physical features look bland.

Mistake 2: Wanting the color to be the exact shade from scalp to ends
A child’s natural brunette hair has subtle differences that add movement and shine throughout the hair. Ask your colorists to combine a few different colors to insure imperfectly perfect brunette color. No inky flat brunettes allowed!

Mistake 3: Not changing your makeup
You’d want to switch up your makeup palette to enhance your new hair coloring. Visit your local cosmetic counter for some friendly suggestions. A bit bolder look is usually called for when making this transformation.

Mistake 4: Using the same shampoos as when blonde
Non-sulphate shampoos are a must when going to the dark side. They help keep color in and fade out. Also, vinegar rinses (whether homemade or store-bought) really help with shine.

Mistake 5: Blondes going brunette in the summer without caution
Just know that when one chooses to go brunette during warm-weather months, chlorine and salt water combined with extra sunshine wreak double fade havoc.

4 Hair Color Upgrades to Make Now | Beauty Blitz

Gorgeous is rarely the same shade all over. If you’re refreshing your hue at home, you shouldn’t be applying color to the entire head time and time again, says Avon Global Hair Color Expert Lorri Goddard, who tends to the manes of red carpet regulars like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lawrence. The common mistake is “one of my pet peeves,” Lorri says. “It inevitably starts to get that inky, heavy look. I really like the edges or the ends [to be lighter]…it feels, to me, natural and soft.”

The BIG Hair Trend: How to Get It And How To Rock It | Latest-Hairstyles.com

“To give your big hair shape and staying power, add in thin veils of highlights one shade lighter than your existing shade. Layer the highlights at the crown. The veils of light will keep your volume in,” says Lorri Goddard-Clark, AVON’s Global Hair Colorist and author of The Hair Color Mix Book. Lorri says blonde highlights and all over hues can also keep your hair big and bold. Lorri also suggests you stop washing your hair every day – this helps maintain volume.

“Southern Belles have always known the charm of ‘the higher your hair, the closer you are to God.’ Take a tip from them and never underestimate some honest back combing. Finish off the back combing with Avon’s Advance Techniques Volumizing Spray ($8, avon.com),” Lorri says.

Jennifer Lawrence Ditches Her Hunger Games Hue: Daily Beauty Reporter: Daily Beauty Reporter: allure.com

When Lionsgate announced that Jennifer Lawrence would be the face of The Hunger Games, fans (including us) were shocked. How could that blonde megababe in the plunging, Jessica Rabbit gown at the Oscars play a hardscrabble, bow-wielding brunette? But she proved us wrong—and now she’s boldly promoting the film with the very same sunny highlights that caused so much commotion in the first place.

“She missed her blonde hair,” says Avon Global Colorist Lorri Goddard, who dyed Lawrence’s hair back to blonde before her European press junket. “She wanted to get back to the natural color she grew up with.” Goddard used a balayage technique to gently paint on different shades of blonde lighting cream. This approach was gentler on her strands than foils and bleach, Goddard said, and allowed her to create customized sun-kissed highlights. “She said it was it was the best blonde she’s ever had,” Goddard said.

We love that Lawrence, who still has two films ahead of her, isn’t afraid to return to her natural color between films. She doesn’t need to light herself on fire to remind us that she’s this year’s biggest film star, that girl can act. And that, more than the color of her hair, is the kick-ass attitude we needed in a character like Katniss. Did we mention that the film’s release is only 9 days away? (Freaking. Out).

Hollywood’s Blonde Obsession – Studio 360

HOLLYWOOD’S BLONDE OBSESSION

Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn (Laurence Cendrowicz/The Weinstein Company)

In the movies, blonde is more than just a hair color: it’s a moral judgment. It started in the 1910s with Mary Pickford, the innocent blonde who needed saving. By the 1930s, another kind of blonde was on the scene: the Jean Harlow type — racy, tough, with a lot more innuendo and a platinum dye job.

“In the mind of the moviegoing male,” says film critic Rafer Guzman, “the blonde is something that you own, that you want to own. She represents something that you’re going to attain … like an expensive watch.”

Almost sixty years after Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Marilyn Monroe remains our quintessential platinum-haired bombshell. “Glamour is the combination of elegance and sleaze,” says Guzman, “Marilyn Monroe had that.”

But it’s not always easy being blonde, says indie actress Greta Gerwig. “It’s hard in big films not to just serve the function of being decorative, or a goal for the male protagonist who’s doing all the interesting things,” she says. Still, Gerwig wouldn’t give up her hair for anything. She remembers when, as a child, she was told her hair would get darker. “I became uncontrollably sad,” says Gerwig, “I just couldn’t believe it.”

The hair makeover: How your childhood snaps could hold the secret to you looking ten years younger | Mail Online

The hottest new anti-ageing trick in Hollywood is designed to take ten years off your looks in just a few hours. No, it’s not Botox, but blonding. Hairdresser Lorri Goddard-Clark is a Los Angeles super-colourist, responsible for the golden locks of A-listers including Drew Barrymore, the Olsen twins, Heidi Klum, Kate Winslet, Michelle Pfeiffer and Sienna Miller.

A buttery blonde herself, her hot tip to melt away the years is to go for highlights. ‘Try to find pictures of yourself on the beach at the age of four or five,’ she says. ‘As we age, our hair darkens, but if you pick a colour that you once were, you know you have the best and most natural colour for you.’

My daughter Cecily, who is four-and-a-half, is a mini version of me at the same age, right down to the frown and terrifying stubbornness. She also has the most beautiful hair. It’s a dark blonde, the colour of Greek honey, tiger striped with natural highlights that look like sunshine.

Like my daughter I was stripey blonde as a child, but as Lorri said, my hair darkened with age, going from honey blonde to dark bronze to midbrown in my teens. Until recently, I had no desire to change it.

Want To Go Gorgeously Red Like Liv Tyler? : Beauty Blogger: Beauty: teenvogue.com

I got the beauty411 from her haircolorist, the superbly talented Lorri Goddard-Clark: “Liv chose her color for a character in a film she is playing. We played with different hues until she liked what she saw for her role. My top tips for girls thinking of going scarlet are:

1. First of all, red is fun and flirtatious, so go for it!

2. Start with a color shampoo or gloss to test the waters.

3. Be prepared for a once a week 10 to 15 minute gloss to keep the color fresh.

4. Try doing a few caramel colored highlights first, then get your red on. This gives texture and more beautiful results.

5.Make sure to wear a lip stain, lip gloss or lipstick. Red looks better with a pretty lip color, from soft pink to…. you guessed it, classic red.

6. Red can help you look and feel amazing, so be prepared to stop traffic!”

Q&A With Lorri Goddard Clark: Beauty Blogger: Beauty: teenvogue.com

As I’ve come to understand it, hair stylists and hair colorists are pretty much like dentists and orthodontists – you specialize in one or the other (color or cuts) and rarely both. I’m fascinated by color, and get a thrill not unlike skydiving (as I imagine it – I’d rather eat my hair than actually jump out of a plane) out of having my hair done. So you can imagine how pumped I was to get to interview Lorri Goddard Clark with the Neil George Salon, who tends to two of my favorite blondes… the Olsens!

How did you get started with color? What about it do you love?

My love of color began as a child, coloring with crayons and painting. While in beauty school, my color instructor, Mr. Chandler, told us that most hairdressers are apprehensive about doing color, if you want to get ahead, master it. I have always liked a challenge. What I love most about color is helping people to feel their most beautiful and confident!
